Imagine the exhibit halls of the ADA Annual Session, the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting, and the Greater New York Dental Meeting combined into one gigantic trade show. Then add the exhibits from the California Dental Association Spring and Fall sessions.

Now you have some idea of the scope of the International Dental Show (IDS), held every other year in Cologne, Germany. I spent three days roaming the halls and stands at IDS last month.

A stand is what we call a booth at U.S. trade shows, and neither word comes close to describing a typical exhibit space—design motifs ranged from Cirque du Soleil to middle-school science fair. Some of the stands sported elaborate fountains, working operatories with live procedures projected on monitors, luxurious lounge areas within booths where visitors can enjoy exotic hors d'oeuvres and all types of alcoholic and non-alcoholic libations—these were the backdrops for some serious shopping. Meeting planners are reporting that internal sales goals were reached by the second day of the event.

First, the vital statistics:

• five days of vendors' exhibits

• 1,551 companies from 48 countries exhibiting

• 75,000 attendees from 141 countries

• 351,049 square feet of exhibit space in three separate buildings

These grand figures don't even reflect the ambience and general mood in the exhibit hall. Amazingly, it was packed for all five days of the show (there is no continuing education component to IDS—everyone who attends is there to visit the exhibits). The enthusiasm of the exhibitors and the curiosity of the visitors was infectious.

So, why all the hoopla? Lots and lots and lots of new products. The great majority of the new offerings introduced at IDS are available only in European and other foreign markets. Historically, however, it isn't too long before we start seeing some of the more notable and innovative products on the U.S. market.

Here are a few specific introductions and trends:

• KaVo introduced a pen-style version of its DIAGNOdent laser-based caries detection system, and continues to promote the HealOzone ozone-based caries therapy unit.

• Sirona introduced the PerioScan ultrasonic scaler that also detects calculus.

• Several wireless digital radiography sensors were spotlighted.

• A comprehensive array of restorative and preventive products were introduced with antibacterial and/or remineralizing ingredients.

• Two treatment options where the mainstream of North American practitioners may be lagging behind their European counterparts are laser dentistry and implant dentistry—and this is evidenced in the very large number of exhibitors focusing on these two disciplines—and the large number of doctors making purchases.

• Similarly, European dentists are catching up with their North American colleagues in the whitening arena. In the past, tooth-bleaching systems and accessories were relatively scarce in the IDS exhibit halls. This year they were everywhere.

Throughout 2005, we'll be bringing you details on many of the innovations first shown at this year's IDS.
